Stonehenge is one of the most visited monuments in the world, which usually means one thing: coach parties, from mid-morning onward. Raised on Salisbury Plain some 5,000 years ago, Stonehenge remains one of the world's most studied and least understood monuments. Nobody knows for certain how or why it was built, and that uncertainty is a large part of its pull — your guide will walk you through the leading theories, from ancient burial site to astronomical calendar, while you take in the sheer scale of the stones up close.

About Stonehenge
Stonehenge stands on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, roughly two hours west of London. Built in stages between around 3000 and 1500 BC, it remains one of the most recognisable prehistoric monuments on Earth — and one of the least understood. Theories about its purpose range from a burial ground to an astronomical calendar aligned with the solstices, and archaeologists still debate exactly how Neolithic builders transported and raised stones weighing many tonnes without modern machinery.
Today the site is managed by English Heritage, with a modern visitor centre set back from the stones themselves to preserve the setting. A roped path allows visitors to walk right around the circle, close enough to appreciate the scale without touching the stones — special early or late "inner circle" access can occasionally be arranged separately for those who want to get closer still.
