The experience
Two royal palaces, one Tudor king.
Both of today's palaces trace back to the same larger-than-life figure — Henry VIII. Hampton Court began as Cardinal Wolsey's private residence before Henry claimed it for himself and expanded it into a palace fit for a king; Windsor, meanwhile, had already been a royal fortress for centuries by the time Henry hunted in its park.
The drive between the two takes you along the Thames and past Runnymede, the water meadow where King John sealed the Magna Carta in 1215 — one of the most significant documents in British and world history. It's a natural, scenic link between two very different Tudor stories.

About Hampton Court & Windsor
Hampton Court Palace
Built originally for Cardinal Wolsey in the early 1500s, Hampton Court was claimed by Henry VIII when Wolsey fell from favour, and the King spent lavishly extending it — the Great Hall and the vast Tudor kitchens both date from his reign. The gardens are equally celebrated, home to the famous trapezoid hedge maze planted in the 1690s, still one of the most visited maze attractions in the world.

Windsor Castle has been a royal residence for over 900 years and remains a working home for the King today. Inside, you'll walk through the State Apartments and St George's Chapel, resting place of monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II and Henry VIII himself — bringing the day's two palace stories full circle.
